A night under the stars: Backpacking at Big Bend National Park

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK — The Chihuahuan desert offered a rare but welcome reprieve as temperatures warmed and winds stood still. Miles from the nearest road — and a considerable distance from any real civilization — I traded the comfort of my tent for a night under the stars. Big, bright and infinite. A taste of heaven from my sleeping bag, followed by a deep sacred sleep.

Now I’d gladly trade these linens and glow-in-the-dark ceiling stars for earth pillows and constellation blankets. I surrendered fully to West Texas, and she revealed her prize: A night worth sleeping for.
